We are a volunteer group founded in 1997 and affiliated to the Heart of Wessex Community Rail Working Party. This consists of similar groups for all the stations between Bristol and Weymouth, meeting once a quarter or so with the top management of Great Western Railway in the western region.
We look after the station garden, which is one of the finest on the line. In addition we work to keep the subsidised train service operating through Bruton by encouraging the use of the station, providing information about train services, lobbying for improved services and facilities, especially more convenient train times and of course more carriages to reduce overcrowding. We provide the first point of contact if there is something obviously wrong at the station, and alert the Great Western Railway Stations Manager at Westbury, who can either put work in hand or call on Network Rail if the matter is one for them to deal with. We are also in contact with the management of South West Trains and make clear to them that we hope for a much fuller service from them under the new franchise, from July 2017.
For work on the station garden we meet on the first Thursday of each month from March to October. We are really keen to have new members, and anyone interested in joining us will be most welcome to come along on one of our gardening days and see what we do. It would probably be best, in case some month we meet on a different day. to contact the Secretary on (01749) 813 485 or at email@example.com. Or you may like to contact us by using the Feedback Page.
The parent body for the Working Party, mentioned in the first paragraph, is the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership. Its members include Bristol City Council, the three County Councils, Bath and NE Somerset Council, the District Councils along the line, Network Rail and Great Western Railway, which operates the trains.
Both Bruton Town Council and South Somerset District Council have provided us with generous grants for our work at the station, and the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership has funded the creation of this independent web site and has given much other valuable financial support, in addition to general guidance and constant encouragement.
